Respecting Others: Being Reliable
One key to being a respectful person is reliability. A reliable person is someone who does what they say they will and doesn’t make promises they can’t keep. You can count on them—which is another way of saying you can trust them. And when it comes to soulful persuasion, trust is everything. The most compelling argument, sales pitch, or advertising campaign in the world means nothing if you don’t trust that the words that you’re hearing will translate into action.
Breaking even the most inconsequential promise is enough to undermine your reliability and, in the process, disrespect someone. To take one easy example, say something unexpected and urgent comes up during a phone conversation, and you tell the person on the phone, “Actually, I need to call you right back.” We say this all of the time, and most people on the receiving end are fine with it. But if you don’t, in fact, call that person back, it can count against you.
While you might not think twice about breaking that promise, odds are the person you hung up on will—people are highly sensitive to any sign of disrespect. And by making an empty promise, you’re telling that person that you only care about them when it’s convenient.
Keeping even the smallest of promises is a pretty easy way to demonstrate your character and earn trust. Here are some habits that can reveal your reliability without your having to think about it.
